(a.k.a.) “HAWK” = High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk

​ Often a traffic signal is not justified under MUTCD standards, but pedestrians can face traffic conditions that are risky to extremely hazardous. The pedestrian activated HAWK pedestrian crosswalk offers increased safety at an affordable price. Because the controls are located in a pole mounted cabinet, the cost compared to a standard intersection controller on a pad mounted cabinet tends to cost substantially less.

​A pedestrian hybrid traffic signal is a special type of beacon used to warn and control motorists at marked, un-signalized crosswalks to assist pedestrians crossing a street or highway. As required by the MUTCD, pedestrian hybrid beacons should only be installed in conjunction with marked crosswalks and pedestrian countdown signals.

ELTEC offers a SOLAR POWERED HAWK system using our innovative Mikros EIC (ELTEC Intelligent Controller) with a built-in conflict monitor. Now, an off-the-grid, complete, ready to install, solar powered wireless pedestrian hybrid traffic controller is available! AC systems are also available.

​As required by the MUTCD standards (Chapter 4F 2009 Edition), a typical pole/mast arm includes:

  • Two 3-signal beacon assemblies for each approach (minimum requirement)
  • One pedestrian signal head (WALK/DON’T WALK) at each end of crosswalk (countdown timer optional)
  • Pedestrian Activated (push button or passive activation)

 

A small cabinet housing the Mikros EIC completes the system. If the HAWK system is solar powered, a charge controller and battery are added inside the cabinet; solar panels with a rack are mounted on the pole/mast arm.
